Deadlines & Timeline Overview
Students can study and intern abroad during the spring, summer, fall or academic year term. Refer to each term for specific dates on the deadlines and timelines for the application cycle. It is important that students apply for the correct scholarship term according to their program dates in order to be considered for the Gilman Scholarship.

Application Timelines
Spring Programs
The spring application cycle is for programs that generally start between December 15 and April 15, and coincide with your home institution’s or your international program’s spring calendar. This cycle encompasses spring semester, quarter, calendar year, winter inter-session and January term programs that are a minimum of three weeks, two weeks for current community college students, in length.
Spring 2019 Timeline
The Spring 2019 application cycle is for study abroad programs generally beginning between December 15, 2018 and April 15, 2019. This cycle encompasses spring semester, quarter, calendar year, winter inter-session and January term programs that are a minimum of three weeks in length.

Mid-August 2018 | Online application opens for Spring 2019 study abroad programs and internships. |
October 2, 2018 | Student Deadline for submission of online application, including transcript(s). Must submit application by 11:59pm CDT. |
October 9, 2018 | Advisor Deadline for submission of online Study Abroad Advisor and Financial Aid Advisor section. |
October/November 2018 | Complete Applications are processed and distributed to selection panels for review. |
Late-November 2018 | All Applicants are notified of the status of their application via email. Study Abroad and Financial Aid Advisors will be notified of scholarship recipients via email. A list of the recipients will be available on the Gilman website. |
December 2018 | Scholarship recipients must accept/decline their award and submit required documentation. |
Summer Programs
The Gilman Program offers two summer application cycles for programs that generally start between May 1 and August 1 that are a minimum of three weeks, two weeks for current community college students,in length and coincide with your home institution’s or your international program’s summer calendar. Summer cycles encompass summer and May term programs.
Summer 2018 Timelines
Students with programs beginning between May 1, 2018 and August 1, 2018 (that meet the program length minimum) can apply to either or both summer 2018 application cycles outlined below. Depending on the student’s study abroad program or international internship commitment deadlines, students can determine the summer application cycle that best meets their timeline of notification.
All applicants are notified of the status of their application via email. Study abroad and financial aid advisors will be notified of scholarship recipients via email and will be able to view applicants and recipient statuses in their Gilman advisor account. A list of the awards offered will be available on the Gilman website. If an applicant for the summer 2018 early application is not selected, they may re-apply during the summer 2018 application cycle as long as they continue to meet the Gilman Scholarship Program’s eligibility criteria.

Award Distribution
The Gilman Scholarship Program will notify award recipients when their award documentation is complete, approved and their scholarship funds will be sent through IIePay (Zelle). Award disbursements are sent approximately 3-4 weeks after your award documentation is complete.
