Gilman Scholarship Program
"As an Asian-American studying in an Asian country "As an Asian-American studying in an Asian country, I often get questioned if I speak Mandarin Chinese or how I came to grow up in America. I always tell the same story about where my parents came from when it comes to my origin. However, I realize that through this study abroad experience that my Mandarin can be a bit lacking in some fields. For example, I am unable to read or write in Chinese. Thus, my Chinese is limited to only speaking from experience that I've gained from talking to my family. It made me realize that I was more isolated from other Asians in America than in Singapore. ." - Tina Wong, Singapore 2023
