Spring 2019 Gilman Scholars in Singapore got their first tastes of Steamboat, Bakkwa, and Lo Hei when U.S. Embassy Singapore brought them to Chinatown to experience these quintessential Singaporean Lunar New Year traditions. Some ate pig’s liver and black fungi for the first time, while others tried their hand at tossing a raw fish salad (Yusheng).
“It is my first time celebrating Chinese New Year, it is amazing!,” said Gilman Scholar Chandler Posey, a sociology major at Elon University. “The color, the life, the energy; it’s more communal and that just has a lot more weight and a lot greater depth in the celebration of it.”
