On April 4, 2018, Gilman alum Lucas Rivers received Reach the World’s Alumni Achievement Award at its its Annual Benefit at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park.
Lucas is a 2015 graduate of Union College, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Chinese Language. In 2013, he was a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, using the award to study abroad in Shanghai, China. While in China, Lucas served as a volunteer traveler for Reach the World, matching with a sixth-grade classroom in the South Bronx. From 2015 to 2016, he served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Hà Tĩnh through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program and was nominated by U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer as one of ten delegates to take part in the U.S. Congress-Republic of Korea National Assembly Exchange Program. Lucas now works as a Program Manager for The Resolution Project in New York City and is a member of the 2018 cohort of the Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service through New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service.
Since 2009, Reach the World has shared the journeys of over 1,200 volunteer travelers from around the world with over 21,000 young students across the U.S. and Canada. The Alumni Achievement Award is designed to honor the alumni of RTW’s volunteer traveler program who best reflect the skills and values of global competence, and who have already begun to experience success in their career journey.
